About our Aircon installation service

  • 9,000 to 24,000 BTU units
  • Inverter models as standard
  • Coastal corrosion protection
  • Supply and install or install only

We supply and install split-system air conditioners for bedrooms, lounges, offices, shops and restaurants across Cape Town, the Winelands, Helderberg and the West Coast. You can buy the unit from us, or have us install one you have already bought.

Most aircon complaints come from a unit that is the wrong size for the room or a poor installation: a drain that leaks down the wall, pipes with kinks, or an outdoor unit placed where it cannot breathe. We size the unit to the room, run the pipes straight and insulated, and test the cooling and the drain before we leave.

The Western Cape is a hard place for an aircon. Paarl and Stellenbosch get long, hot summers, and anywhere near the sea, salt air eats unprotected metal. We pick and install units with that in mind.

What we install

wall split multi-split cassette
  • Split unit supply and install

Wall-mounted split units from 9,000 to 24,000 BTU, supplied and installed with a standard 3m pipe run.

  • Inverter units

Our standard recommendation. They cost more upfront and less to run. Explained below.

  • Multi-split systems

One outdoor unit serving two or more indoor units, useful when wall space outside is limited. We quote these after seeing the layout.

  • Cassette and under-ceiling units

For shops, offices and restaurants where a wall unit will not do. Site visit required.

  • Relocating units

Moving an existing split unit to another wall or another house. Gas work for this is handled by a registered refrigeration practitioner.

  • Coastal corrosion protection

Anti-corrosion coated coils, galvanised or stainless brackets and sealed connections for homes close to the sea.

Which size do I need?

Aircon size is measured in BTU (British thermal units) per hour. Too small and the unit runs flat out and never cools. Too big and it switches on and off quickly, cools unevenly and wastes electricity.

bedroom lounge open plan
Room sizeUnit sizeTypical room
Up to about 15m²9,000 BTUSmall bedroom or study
15 to 25m²12,000 BTUMain bedroom or small lounge
25 to 35m²18,000 BTULarge lounge or open-plan living area
35 to 50m²24,000 BTULarge open-plan area, small shop or office

This is a starting guide. Move up one size for a room with big west- or north-facing windows, a tin or flat roof, a kitchen opening onto it, or many people. Inland towns such as Paarl and Stellenbosch also get hotter than the coast, so we often size up there. We confirm the size on site.

Inverter or fixed speed?

fixed speed inverter

A fixed-speed unit runs at full power until the room reaches the set temperature, switches off, then starts again when it warms up. An inverter unit changes its compressor speed to hold the temperature steadily. It starts fast to cool the room, then slows to maintain it.

That makes inverters quieter and noticeably cheaper to run, and they suit a country where electricity prices keep rising. They also draw less current when starting, which helps on a home with a small supply or an inverter and battery system. Fixed-speed units cost less to buy and still make sense for a spare room used a few times a year.

Where the unit goes

Position matters as much as size. The indoor unit should sit high on a wall with clear space around it, away from the bed head and not blowing straight onto where people sit. The outdoor unit needs airflow on all sides, shade where possible and a short, straight pipe run. Every extra metre of pipe costs cooling and money, and runs longer than the standard 3m add to the price.

Condensate drains away through a small pipe, so we plan its fall to a gutter, drain or garden before drilling. If you rent, tell us before we start, and we can suggest positions that are easier to undo when you move.

Coastal corrosion protection

salt air protective coating

Salt air corrodes the outdoor unit's coil, screws, brackets and electrical connections. On the West Coast, in Bloubergstrand, Hermanus and anywhere the southeaster or north-westerly brings salt spray, a standard outdoor unit can start to rot in a few years.

For coastal homes, we recommend units with anti-corrosion coated coils, mount the outdoor unit on galvanised or stainless brackets, seal the electrical entry points and place it out of direct spray. We also advise rinsing the outdoor unit with fresh water now and then, which our aircon servicing does as part of a clean.

Brands, electrical supply and gas work

own breaker isolator aircon

We install units from brands commonly sold in South Africa, including Samsung, LG, Midea, Gree, Daikin and Alliance. Ask us what is available and what suits your budget and room.

An aircon needs its own circuit with an isolator at the outdoor unit. If your DB board has no spare breaker or the wiring is old, our electrical team can add a dedicated circuit before the unit goes in. Gas connections and regassing are handled by a registered refrigeration and gas practitioner.

How an aircon install works

  1. Tell us about the room

Send the room size, a photo of the wall and a photo of where the outdoor unit could go.

  2. Size and quote

We recommend a unit size and give a written quote, or a site visit first for larger jobs.

  3. Mount and pipe

We fit the indoor unit, drill the pipe hole, run insulated pipes, drain and cable, and mount the outdoor unit on a solid bracket.

  4. Gas connections and leak check

Gas connections are done and checked by a registered refrigeration and gas practitioner, so the system cools properly and holds its charge.

  5. Commission and hand over

We check cooling, drain flow and noise, then show you the remote, timer and filter cleaning.

What it costs

No surprises: you get the price before we book, and before any work starts.

Jobs start from R450

The price depends on the unit size, the pipe run, the wall type, any dedicated circuit and whether you want a multi-split system. Call or WhatsApp 081 232 2249 for a price. The room size and a photo of the wall help.

Send a photo of the dish, the fault or the wall on WhatsApp and we’ll come back with a price, usually within working hours.

Aircon installation questions

Straight answers to what people ask us most. Anything else, WhatsApp a photo and ask.

How much does aircon installation cost?

Aircon jobs start from R450. The price of an installation depends on the unit size and brand, whether we supply the unit or you bring your own, the pipe run, the wall type and any extra electrical work. Call or WhatsApp 081 232 2249 for an exact price. The room size and a photo of the wall help.

What size aircon do I need for my room?

As a guide: up to 15m² takes 9,000 BTU, 15 to 25m² takes 12,000, 25 to 35m² takes 18,000 and 35 to 50m² takes 24,000. Go up one size for west-facing windows, a tin roof or an inland town like Paarl. Send us your room size on WhatsApp and we will confirm.

Is an inverter aircon worth it?

For a room you use regularly, yes. An inverter adjusts its compressor speed instead of switching on and off, so it runs quieter, holds the temperature steadily and uses less electricity. It costs more to buy than a fixed-speed unit. For a spare room used a few times a year, fixed-speed can make more sense.

Will salt air damage my aircon near the sea?

It can, within a few kilometres of the coast. Salt corrodes coils, brackets and connections. We use units with anti-corrosion coated coils, galvanised or stainless brackets and sealed connections, and we mount the outdoor unit out of direct spray. Regular cleaning with fresh water helps. Our servicing includes that.

How long does installation take?

A standard wall-mounted split usually takes between half a day and a day. Longer pipe runs, brick or concrete walls, extra electrical work or several units add time. We tell you when we quote. We test cooling and drain flow before we leave and show you how to clean the filters.

Do you handle the gas?

Gas connections and regassing are handled by a registered refrigeration and gas practitioner. We arrange this as part of the install, so you deal with one team. If a unit needs regassing later, see our aircon servicing and repairs page.
