Jobs we do every week

What we usually find when we arrive, and what we leave behind.

  • A rusted satellite dish on a face-brick wall below a corrugated roof, with loose cables hanging down the wall

Rusted dish replaced on a brick house

The problem: An old dish has rusted through, the bracket is stained and loose cables hang down the wall. The picture breaks up and the decoder loses channels.

The fix: We take down the old dish, fit a new one on a solid wall bracket and run fresh cable, neat and weatherproofed. We align it, test every channel and clear away the old dish.

  • A new white satellite dish on a wall bracket under the roof edge of a face-brick house, with a single neat cable running down the wall

New dish and tidy cable run on a face-brick house

The problem: A house needs a working dish with a neat, safe cable run, and the old setup is beyond saving.

The fix: A new dish goes on a wall bracket, the cable runs straight down the wall in clips, and the decoder is connected and activated. We check the signal before we leave.

    DSTV installation

  • A satellite dish on a roof bracket beside a brick chimney under heavy storm clouds, with trees bending in the wind in the background

Wind-shifted dish realigned in the southeaster

The problem: After a strong southeaster the dish has moved a little. Some channels freeze and the decoder shows a weak-signal message, mostly in the evening.

The fix: We check the bracket and mount, realign the dish with a signal meter and tighten everything down. If the mount is weak, we brace or replace it so the next gale does not move it.

  • A technician in navy overalls holding a handheld signal meter with a cable connected, with a satellite dish and LNB on a corrugated roof behind him

Signal fault traced with a meter on the roof

The problem: The picture was fine until it was not. The decoder says no signal, and nothing obvious has changed.

The fix: We connect a signal meter at the dish and work back to the decoder: dish, LNB, cable, connectors. Whatever is failing gets replaced or realigned, and we test the channels afterwards.

  • A technician in navy overalls with reflective strips kneeling on a corrugated roof, using a spanner on the bracket of a grey satellite dish

Dish aligned and bolted down on a corrugated roof

The problem: A roof-mounted dish needs to be aimed correctly and held firmly, or it drifts and the picture drops out.

The fix: We bolt the bracket to the roof structure, point the dish at the satellite and fine-tune it with a meter. Then we lock every bolt and seal the fixings against water.

  • Second decoder added to a bedroom

The problem: One decoder serves the lounge, and the family wants to watch DSTV in another room as well.

The fix: We check the dish and LNB can feed two decoders, run the cable to the second room and link the decoders to one subscription. Both are tested before we leave.

  • Shared dish set up for a small complex

The problem: A complex has several individual dishes on the walls and roofs, and the body corporate wants something tidier.

The fix: We plan one shared dish and a distribution system to the units, fit it and test it unit by unit. The rest of the old dishes can then come down.

The problem: A holiday flat needs working TV for guests, with no monthly subscription to look after.

Lounge TV levelled and mounted on the wall

The problem: A TV is sitting on a unit with cables everywhere, and the owner wants it on the wall at a comfortable height.

The fix: We choose a bracket to suit the TV and wall, level and mount it and tidy the cables. Then we connect the decoder and soundbar and check the picture.

The problem: A holiday home stands empty for weeks, and the owner wants to see who comes and goes from another town.

  • Sliding gate motor fitted with battery backup

The problem: A heavy manual gate is a chore, and the family wants to open it from the car, including during load shedding.

The fix: We check the gate runs freely, fit a gate motor with a battery for outages, add remotes and fit safety beams. We show everyone how to open it by hand.

  • Gate motor that beeps and will not close

The problem: The gate motor beeps, opens slowly or stops halfway, and in the end it will not close at all.

The fix: We test the battery, the safety beams, the limit switches and the board to find the actual fault. We replace the failed part and check the gate runs smoothly and safely.

  • Split aircon fitted in a main bedroom

  • Aircon cleaned and serviced after salty sea air

The problem: A unit near the sea cools badly, smells musty and drips water inside, because salt and dirt have built up.

The fix: We clean the filters, indoor coil and drain, wash the outdoor unit and check the gas and electrical connections. We note any part that is wearing so you can plan ahead.

The problem: A breaker keeps tripping, and the family unplugs things one by one without finding the cause.

The fix: We test the circuit and the appliances on it to find the fault: a worn plug, a damaged cable or an overloaded circuit. Then we repair it and explain what failed.

  • Electrical inspection before a house sale

The problem: A seller needs an electrical COC for transfer, and nobody knows what the inspection will find.
